Standalone items
This page tries to stay out of the way when presenting this album. My father put this album together himself. His photographs, trips, items saved, handwriting, choices about what went where on each page. My goal here was simply to let that speak, the way it always has. Even lifting the tissue separator before a page reveals itself is part of that: a small pause, the same one you'd take holding the album itself.
The Extras section was to gather a few things he tucked into the album but never fixed to a page. To my surprise, these items all have more story and context than I was expecting. The "casino ticket", more like a signed contract to gain admission to the casino. The menu prices in Deutsche Mark (DM), so long ago when there was no concept of the Euro. Digging into the items, the photos and the negatives, there is a whole world of exploring that can continue.
The Photographer section draws from a wider collection of his photos and negatives. Some images from this album, others from the same time period and location, determined by the photo negatives in my possession. His storage of the negatives was organized and kept together, though not fully documented.
My role silently shifted from 'presenter' to 'curator' as I was pulled into the images and words that my father put in his album. From checking his spelling to tracking down an unfamiliar city, I found myself more immersed in the photos and drawing on what it would be like to be there in 1955. Because I have his original negatives, I have seen additional photos from this time, but only now can link them to a known location. While keeping the original pages in place for you to view as-is, I did add some minor footnotes to help the viewer's experience.
